Training/retraining as an educator – PBW

At Paritätisches Bildungswerk, you can train or retrain as an educator.

Educators work with children or young people, e.g., in nurseries, daycare centers, after-school care centers, all-day schools, leisure facilities, special education facilities, and inpatient child and youth welfare facilities.

The training/retraining is for people from Bremen who meet one of the following requirements:

Secondary school diploma (Realschule) and three years of relevant professional experience (working with children or young people)
Intermediate school leaving certificate (Realschule), vocational training, and at least 900 hours of relevant professional experience
Equivalent school leaving certificate from another country, proof of German language skills at level B2, and three years of relevant professional experience
At least two years of relevant vocational training (e.g., social education assistant)
University entrance qualification and at least 900 hours of relevant professional experience

Employers can apply for a subsidy from the Federal Employment Agency under the Qualification Opportunities Act to participate.

For retraining, funding can be applied for via an education voucher from the Job Center/Federal Employment Agency.

The subjects taught include:
German and communication
Society and politics
Shaping educational relationships
Educational work with groups
Shaping social-educational learning processes
Holistic promotion of health development
Recognizing connections between nature and environmental education, ecological action
Legal and administrative foundations of social-educational work
Shaping educational partnerships with parents and caregivers
Team development
Cooperation with institutions and networks

The content is based on the learning areas of the training program to become an educator. In addition, there are elective subjects for further study, e.g., “Prejudice-conscious education and upbringing.”

For state recognition as an educator, you must complete a 12-month professional internship. Depending on your individual background, existing practical experience can be credited towards the duration of the professional internship. The planning and preparation of the professional internship takes place during the technical college training.

The training/retraining concludes with the state examination to become an educator.
